Fifth Newsletter Sept. 1957
This summer 5 years have passed after the Häberlen families had their last meeting. It was the 5th meeting within 31 years.
The first meeting was on Oct. 3, 1926 at the wonderful "Weinhaus am See" in Stuttgart. It was a wonderful, mild autumn Sunday during which 76 members of the family came together under the chairmanship of Karl Häberlen. He was the former mayor of Calmbach who was well known and beloved by everybody. It was a very successful beginning and there was no lack of entertainment: August HÄBERLEN (Tübingen) and Wilhelm Remppis (Reutlingen, the grandfather of the translator) were offering self-made poems, the latter in Frankish dialect. Bertha Eitle (Betzweiler) together with Johanna, Karl, and Otto Häberlen (Stuttgart, Magdeburg, Tübingen) offered musical performances. In the end they decided to meet again in a three years rhythm.
The next meeting was on Oct. 20, 1929 at the "Traube" in Weinsberg. There were even more participants, because apart from the many relatives from Weinsberg, there were about 40 persons from Willsbach. The good spirit of this day was the result of many elements: the unseasonably mild weather, the hospitality of the Weinsberg relatives, the thougths about the friendly little town in which many genertations of our forefathers had lived and tended their vineyards, our visit to the "Kerner" house, the walk to the "Weibertreu" castle. After the opening by Georg Häberlen (Weinsberg) our senior, the 80 year old Karl Häberlen (Calmbach)

took over the chair. His cousin, August Häberlen (Tübingen) duly thanked him and expressed his adoration. Poems were offered by Ruth Häberlen (Weinsberg) and Otto Häberlen (Tübingen). He also contributed the musical part of the day in conjunction with Johanna Häberlen (Stuttgart).
Because of the unfavorable economical and political conditions there was a
longer pause until upon the suggestion of several persons an invitation for
the third Family Day was issued. This time about 80 relatives met at the Hindenburg
Bau in Stuttgart on May 13, 1934. Among those who had passed away in the meantime,
we also had to mourn our dear Calmbach cousin. He had earned such high merits
about our common cause and he died in the age of 82. Now August Häberlen (Tübingen)
was our senior and he took over the chair. Very convenient were the different
colored silk bands which marked the different family lines for easier determination.
Eugen Kreeb (Stuttgart) spoke about the meaning and the purpose of a Family
Chronic and recited a funny poem on the origin of the family name. The issue
of the Family Book in 1937 is proof that his suggestion fell on fertile soil.
Further poetry was offered by Wilhelm Remppis (Reutlingen) in dialect on "The
Women of Weinsberg" and by Gertrud Häberlen (Schwäbisch Hall).
The 4th Family Day was again at Weinsberg. Among the approx. 120 participants especially the ones from Weinsberg and the numerous ones from Willsbach took over the entertainment. She-cousins from Willsbach rehearsed a funny theater performance, and Adolf Rechkemmer (Heilbronn)

received much applause for self-made poems which he recited together with Hedwig Häberlen (Weinsberg).The musical part again was offered by Johanna Häberlen (Stuttgart) together with her son Konrad. Aspecial honor was the fact that Mayor Weinbrenner stayed among us for some hours. The youngsters which were present in great number were dancing very actively - as usual on Family Days.
Who would have thought that this would be the last get-together for a long time and for many the last Family Day. Two years later we had this war which brought so much misery upon our people and our family. It took years after the complete downfall to pick up the threads again. Occasion for a renewed family reunion gave the visit of cousin Gottlob Haeberlen (Ann Arbor/Michigan) with his wife Klara née Rohde (see Family Book p. 107). Since his emigration after the First War it was his first visit to Germany. He had earned the highest esteem among his German relatives, because he sent innumerable parcels to many relatives during this most miserable time after World War II when we all were starving. (The translator himself at the time went to High School at Ettlingen/Baden in the American Zone of Occupation while living at Herrenalb in the French Zone of occupation. Through the Häberlen Book of 1937 I found out that Gottlob was a first grade cousin of my father. And although we did not know him personally we wrote to him begging for help. And surely he did send us many parcels. I had them sent later on to my address in the American Zone to avoid French Customs and while almost everybody was wearing bits and pieces of former army uniforms I turned up at school clad like an American which was very striking at the time.) Thus we met for the 5th time in the Kasino of the Württembergische Kunstverein in Stuttgart on July 6, 1952. The participants will remember. In spite of the unbearable heat more than 80 persons had gathered. August Häberlen (Tübingen) welcomed the cousin who was in his best years together with his wife. Eugen Kreeb

(Stuttgart-Degerloch) had made a humorous poem on the generous Americans and got plenty applause for it. The cousin was in an excellent mood and felt immediately at home amongst us, and his wife -although born and grown up in the USA- gained the hearts of everyone because of her proper Swabian dialect which she learned from her mother who had originated from the Black Forest. Cousin Gottlob proved to be the real "Uncle from America" in as much as he not only very generously paid for many bottles of fine wine, but he also donated a substantial sum into the empty Family kitty. Following his example the Gaildorf cousin, Karl Häberlen, also donated a considerable sum for the occasion of receiving the Golden Cross of Honor at the International Brewery Exhibition in Luxembourg for his excellent beer. Hermann Clement (Geislingen/Steige) entertained with songs accompanied by himself on the piano.Unfortunately in the evening the electric currant broke down so that a Gavotte by Johanna and Gustav Häberlen (Stuttgart) in the costumes of our great-great parents Johann Georg and Eva Häberlen could only be performed so late that several relatives could no longer see this number. Also the dance had to be canceled.
As successful our 5th Family Day may have been, we are now confronted with the question of whether to continue. Many of the participants of July 6 had come from a feeling of gratefulness towards cousin Gottlob rather fidelity to our Family Association. Of the original founders of the association from the older generation many are no longer alive, and the younger generations do not have the same interest in the family as had the then founders.

Especially missing is this feeling among the people at Weinsberg who actually should be the first and foremost.
Therefore we must clarify how many of our relatives are going to be willing to contribute to the costs of the association. If there should be a majority against the continuation then we should have to dissolve it. This would require another meeting and a majority of 75%. For this reason we invite to one more reunion
at the "Traube" at Weinsberg,
on Oct. 13, 1957.
The reunmon should start with a common midday meal for which please announce your participation to the undersigned by Oct. 1, at the latest.
As long as the association exists there is also the obligation for the members to pay their contributions. Therefore please
